In Côte d'Ivoire, Compagnie Fruitière has announced its intention to move into organic banana production, according to Agence Ecofin.
The French company plans to develop 400ha of plantations in the north and south of the country, said to its new vice-president for Africa, Jean-Marc Gravillini.
Regarding funding, Gravillini revealed the project 'represents a potential investment of Cfa7bn (€10.7m), funded in part by the European Union'.
The investment will allow Compagnie Fruitière to strengthen its position in Côte d’Ivoire, which is the number producer of bananas in Africa.
The move equally demonstrates the confidence the company has in the future of the sector, despite the threat of the TR4 strain of Panama disease.
