Cities competing for the right to host fresh produce multinational Chiquita Brands International have turned to social networking site Twitter to champion their causes.

Recent reports in the country have suggested that Chiquita appears to be seeking possible alternatives to its current location of Cincinnati in Ohio, searching under the codename 'Project Opus', with Charlotte in North Carolina and Palm Beach County in Floridaboth explored as possibilities.

In response to this, public-relations professionals in Cinicinnati launched a twitter account, #NoCincyBananaSplit, in a bid to help retain Chiquita's business, the Charlotte Business Journal reported.

However, no to be outdone, business boosters in Charlotte have fought back by launching their own campaign under the title #bananasforCLT, with more than 100 tweets logged to highlight the city's 'friendly people' and climate.

While not giving their plans away just yet, Chiquita has certainly taken note of the online battle.

'Floored by the good natured Twitter campaigns,' Tweeted Chiquita CEO Fernando Aguirre on his own account. 'Two Gr8 (great) regions w (with) lots of positive people.'
