Chile’s export organisation Gesex joined Chinese importers and retailers for the official launch event for Chilean nectarines gaining access to China hosted by the Trade Commissioner of Chile in Beijing.
The first container of nectarines was showcased to e-tailers, importers and the media, with information on their nutritional content and health benefits.
Gonzalo Matamala, the general manager of Gesex China, told Fruitnet that while the current nectarine season in Chile was coming to an end, there was still a window to ship fruit to China.
“We are very excited for the opening of the new market, and enthusiastic about the possibilities at the end of the year with bigger volume and more varieties,” he said. “We expect the new season to start in October and November this year.”
Chile began negotiating access for nectarine four years ago, with access granted in October last year.
The first season of shipments saw 150,000 boxes of white and yellow-fleshed nectarines to China, including later-varieties August Red and Arctic Snow.
