Chile has not joined the World Avocado Organization as reported yesterday by the group. Instead, two Chilean companies have signed up for membership, according to Francisco Contardo, general manager of the Chilean Hass Avocado Committee.
He told PortalFrutícola.com that Chile was still considering whether to join as a country.
“As the Chilean Hass Avocado Committee, which represents the country’s avocado producers and exporters, we would like to clarify that Chile has not joined the WAO, but rather certain companies in the sector,” Contardo said.
He did not rule out the possibility of Chile joining at a later date, but maintained that such a decision had not yet been finalised.
Meanwhile, the WAO's chairman Zac Bard of Westfalia said the organisation's membership was set to grow further in the near future.
'We expect to add Kenya and Morocco later this year, to join South Africa, Peru, Colombia, Mexico (state of Jalisco), Spain, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and the US,' Bard said.
'As avocado consumption continues to rise, WAO is pleased to represent the majority of avocado producing countries in the world.'
