Catalan fruit producers’ organisation Catalonia Qualitat, the autonomous Spanish region’s government and regional retailer Supermercats Pujol have launched a new initiative that is aimed at making consumers’ fruit purchases easier.
The project, ‘Palette of colours’, uses different colour coding to differentiate fruit flavours, which the initiative’s organisers believe will aid shoppers in deciding which varieties to buy.
A pink colour is being used to highlight sweet-tasting fruit, while green labelling will signify “refreshing” varieties.
Products being differentiated by their level of sweetness and acidity in the initial phase of the project include nectarines, apples and kiwifruit, which are being featured in three outlets of the Supermercats Pujol chain during a three-week period.
According to Catalan research and development institute IRTA, visitors to the three stores - which are all situated in Lleida - will also have access to supporting information detailing the workings and aims of the system.
