Spanish retailer Caprabo has teamed up with Fruits de Ponent and Spain’s 5-A-Day Association to give away 24,000 pieces of seasonal fruit to children at its stores in Catalonia and Andorra to mark World Fruit and Vegetable Day, which takes place on Monday.
The initiative involves children at the supermarket receiving a Conference pear in a box bearing information on healthy eating that can be reused or transformed into a Halloween mask.
It forms part of the supermarket’s healthy eating programme which has been running since 2009 and bears the slogan ‘Choose well, choose health’.
“More than 50,000 children have been involved in the campaign, which features activities aimed not just at children but also their families and schools,” Caprabo said.
Organised by the International Alliance of 5-a-day associations, World Fruit and Vegetables Day is an international initiative to raise awareness of the importance of eating fruit and vegetables for better health.
This year it coincides with World Food Day, a day of action against hunger organised by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
