Sandwich shops and delis across the UK are being encouraged to spread avocados in their sandwiches as part of a new competition led by the Peruvian Hass Avocado Association (ProHass) to promote the consumption of Hass avocados in the country.
The Add an avocado competition seeks to encourage the use of avocados as a healthy alternative to butter in sandwiches, offering entrants the opportunity to win a cash prize of £1,000 (€1,300).
Entrants must include a sandwich with avocado on their menu for at least a month – either by using mashed avocado instead of butter or by adding it as a filling – and submitting two photographs of the sandwich and the menu.
'The competition aims to raise the profile of avocados to the consumers, and illustrates the versatility of the product,' said Arturo Medina Castro, general manager of ProHass. 'Recent figures show that 75 per cent of the British public have never tried an avocado – we want to change that.
'Avocados are an extremely versatile ingredient, and contain far less saturated fat than butter,' he added. 'We hope that sandwich shop owners will get behind the competition and integrate avocados into their menu to showcase this great product.'
