Better consumer marketing and more innovation in new varieties would help brassica sales achieve their full potential.
That's the main message to emerge from a day-long conference on trends in the cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli and sprout sector that was organised to coincide with the annual open field day hosted by Syngenta Vegetables, the seed company.
'There is much more potential in this sector to grow sales of the full range of brassicas,' Ton van de Goor, product manager at Syngenta Vegetables told Fruitnet.com at the company's annual open day in Wevershoof in the northern Netherlands.
Syngenta Vegetables unveiled a new website to provide information for consumers and trade on the key attributes of brassicas, including cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli and sprouts.
Consumer demand for the category shows clear signs of slowing unless the sector reacts to promote more effectively its core products and to innovate in new packaging and marketing. Syngenta Vegetables, like other seed companies, is developing a wide range of new, interesting varieties of brassicas to add to the range that is currently available.
