Two of Italy's most prominent fresh produce brands have been pedalling hard to gain some valuable publicity at this year's Giro d'Italia, the annual bicycle race taking place this month across the Italian Peninsula.

Banana brand Fratelli Orsero is one of just five top-level podium sponsors at this year's so-called Fight for Pink, lending its name to the white jersey awarded to the best-placed rider under 25 years of age.

Apple marketer VI.P Val Venosta, meanwhile, has secured a prominent position as a main sponsor of what is the 96th edition of race. Two of this year's Giro d'Italia stages pass through the Venosta valley itself.

At each stage of the tour, Fratelli Orsero representatives will invite spectators to take part in a competition to win special commemorative prizes including bikes and cycling kits.

Val Venosta, meanwhile, is set to hold a special promotional event during the race's visit to Val Venosta.

This year's race, also known as the Corsa Rosa, covers a total of 3,405km, beginning in Naples and ending on 26 May in Brescia.

After stage three, Italian Luca Paolini led the overall standings, with the UK's Sir Bradley Wiggins in second and Rigoberto Uran of Colombia in third.
