The success of last month's BioFach organic fair in Nuremberg, which this year saw 2,420 companies exhibiting, was arguably illustrative of the overall performance of the organic sector at this time.
In 2011, the German market grew by 9 per cent to some €6.59bn, while international organic sales are approaching the US$60bn mark.
And despite the continuing economic crisis, BioFach's international patron, IFOAM (international federation of organic agriculture movements), and national supporting organisation BöLW (German federation for the organic food industry), expect further growth in the future.
Representatives of country of the year India claimed to be 'delighted' by the event, describing it as remarkable.
Dr Tarun Bajaj, general manager of APEDA, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, commented: 'India has a lot to offer the international organic market. Now we hope India will remain in people’s minds as a varied and credible country for organic raw materials long after BioFach.”
