UK retailer Asda has signed a deal with the Pakistani High Commission to trial the importation of mangoes from that country, according to website International Supermarket News.
While mangoes from the Asian nation have long been sold in the UK, logistics problems and a lack of awareness of GlobalGAP and BRC standards have largely kept the fruit off supermarket shelves, reported the website.
A spokesperson for the retailer told the news source 25-30 stores that perform well in the sale of ethnic food would be targeted for the trial.
“This is a trial and if it is successful in those stores then we will look at doing it in more,” he said.
“The season will run from June to September for this year’s trial and the mangoes will retail at an unconfirmed, but slightly higher price point than Asda’s standard mango offer.”
