The port of Antwerp has presented its first Sustainability Report, due to be published every two years, demonstrating how companies stationed at the port are reconciling 'people, planet and profit' in their day-to-day activities.
Environmental management is to be given a more prominent role, the report states, while stakeholder management will be further developed.
The port's location deep inland will enable it to reduce transport costs while limiting the environmental impact of hinterland transport, the report adds.
The Sustainability Report forms part of the port's 'Total Plan for a More Competitive Port', which was launched in 2010 in response to the economic crisis.
Work on a Sustainability Manual will reportedly commence later in the year.
'This will describe best practices and provide examples to serve as inspiration, specifically for the port area and the types of activity carried out within it, so that everyone can contribute towards making the port more sustainable,' the Port of Antwerp said.
