A year after launching the Anecoop Sustainability Observatory, team meets to review progress and plan next steps
The Anecoop Sustainability Observatory, launched last October from the alliance between Anecoop and Kiwa R+D, met recently to evaluate the progress the project has made in its first year and set out a roadmap of future actions.
The Observatory has a clear objective: to measure, evaluate and convert data into actionable knowledge. Mari Carmen Morales, Anecoop’s director of quality and sustainability, said: “Data, without an action plan, is irrelevant. With this project, what we want is to generate sufficient knowledge to transfer this data to concrete and coordinated actions across our entire production base”.
This will allow Anecoop’s cooperatives and associated companies to make strategic decisions that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
So far, data has been collected that demonstrates the positive impact of agri-food cooperatives on the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda.
Sustainability is becoming increasingly integrated into the agrifood sector, but change must come faster Anecoop said, noting “the Anecoop Sustainability Observatory will be the catalyst for this change. How will we do it? With innovation, training and excellence”.
Rosa Valenzuela, director of Kiwa R+D, commented: “We are not only going to see, we are going to listen, we are going to learn, transfer knowledge and, therefore, transcend”.
Anecoop plans to implement ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criteria through data science and in alignment with the European Green Deal, the UN Global Compact, the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and the National Green Algorithms Programme.
The project will be underpinned by training, which is why Anecoop recently created the Sustainability Campus to train professionals in the agri-food sector in the best practices to promote sustainable development.
“The Observatory is an example of the proactivity of cooperatives in addressing the challenges posed by sustainability, which is currently under the focus of institutions around the world and a large part of society,” said Juan Cardona, general manager of Kiwa Spain.
