Algeria is reportedly turning to hydroponics to grow vegetables, as the country looks to establish a reliable food supply to feed its estimated 37m citizens.
Since water is scarce in Algeria, hydroponics greenhouse technology, with its ability to conserve water, is regarded as an important component, according to Quebec-based Climate Control Systems.
The Canadian firm has built and delivered a hydroponic water treatment system for Algeria's first hydroponic tomato operation, the company stated in a press release.
“We provide farmers with a complete water recovery and filtration process for irrigation waste water,' explained Eric M Labbate of Climate Control Systems. 'This system will provide the greenhouse growers 30-40 per cent savings on water and fertiliser costs. It was even ordered with a built-in water chiller. The maximum temperatures of over 104°F (40°C) are common in the summer months over Algeria so we built the unit to handle cooling for the hot climate.”
