Avocados are the next step in the retailer’s journey towards responsible fresh produce sourcing
Avocados have become the latest product in the fresh produce department that Aldi South Group has introduced to its new responsible sourcing model.
The strategy – a key part of the retailer’s commitment to build fairer and more transparent supply chains by connecting buying and corporate responsibility – was launched two ago with bananas, with pineapples being added last year.
“Avocados represent a new step in our journey toward responsible fresh produce sourcing. The dynamics in avocado production are different from bananas and pineapples where we can source fruit from the same growers 52 weeks a year. We therefore needed to develop a strategy that accounts for the various avocado sources globally while maintaining a streamlined and equitable sourcing model,” said Franka Rodriguez, director of global sourcing at Aldi South Group.
“However, the core principles of our more sustainable way of sourcing remain consistent across all categories. These include transparency and openness in our operations, constant communication, as well as fostering good partnerships with key growers, direct suppliers and other relevant stakeholders in the supply chain.”
