The Peruvian Hass Avocado Growers Association (ProHass) has announced the winner of its Add an Avocado competition in the UK.
Add an Avocado was run by the Peruvian Hass Avocado Association and aimed to promote the use of avocados as a healthy alternative to butter. The competition saw sandwich shops and cafes asked to design a sandwich, with avocado as the main ingredient, with the sandwich featuring on the café’s menu for at least a month.
The Yew Tree Café in Wootton Wawen, Warwickshire, beat entries from across the country to take the title of Best Avocado Sandwich, plus a cash prize of £1,000 (€1,247).
The winning sandwich was an avocado and Leerdammer focaccia with lettuce, apple, leeks and tomato pickle, designed by owner Sue Price-Whittle and her team.
'Avocados are an extremely versatile ingredient, and contain significantly less saturated fat than butter,' said Arturo Medina Castro, general manager of ProHass. 'Some reports suggest that over the last 12 months 75 per cent of the British public didn’t buy an avocado, so we hope the competition will help us raise the profile of this great product to consumers by highlighting its taste and versatility.'
Sue Price-Whittle, owner of the Yew Tree Café, added: 'The avocado sandwich has been a popular choice on our menu since we designed it. We’re delighted to have won the competition and we will continue to serve the winning sandwich at the café.'
