Walmart store through trees

Walmart is taking the fight to its online rivals with the launch of new websites in the emerging markets of Latin America and China, as it looks to take advantage of what it describes as a 'multibillion dollar opportunity'.

According to the Financial Times, the US-based retailer is looking to compete with the likes of Amazon, Carrefour and Tesco by launching online retail operations in Mexico, Chile and Argentina as well as China, giving it an e-commerce presence in half of its international markets.

It follows heavy investment by the group in over the past two years in creating an online platform that is easily replicated in different languages, the FT reported.

The Latin American consumer market is estimated to be worth some US$30bn and China's worth over US$40bn, with both expanding and offering opportunities for growth.
