Japanese designer Nendo has created a peelable label and minimalist packaging design for Unifrutti Japan’s high-quality ‘shiawase’ banana.
The innovative design features a double-layered sticker; the first layer mimicking the texture and colour of the banana peel, including realistic bruising and discoloration, while the underlying sticker is the colour of the banana flesh and features a message on the banana’s story.
“When we were asked to design the packaging, we didn’t want to just come up with something extravagant because of its high quality: that would be totally inappropriate for an environmentally friendly banana,” nendo explained on its website.“And so we decided to steer clear of boxes or packing material, and apply stickers on the surface of the banana peel.“
The shiawase banana is grown in the Mindanao region of the Philippines, with restrictions on the use of pesticides and only organic fertilisers to be used, in altitudes of at least 1,000m.
Along with the peelable sticker is a paper carrier bag that folds out into the shape of a banana leaf, with a more detailed decription of the banana.
