Increasing exports into Asia are driving the expansion of South Australia’s fresh fruit and vegetable wholesale market.
After signing a memorandum of understandingwith China’s Jiangnan wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Guangzhou the Adelaide Produce Market is now seeking expressions of interest for its new fresh food precinct.
The precinct will cater to 70,000m2 of food processing, export consolidation, warehousing and cold storage facilities, with the potential to house up to 50 businesses.
“We have the supply chain, the location, the land, the existing facilities and over 100 years’ experience to make a food precinct really work,” Adelaide Produce Market CEO Angelo Demasi said.
“What we need are people and companies from within the processing, warehousing, logistics and exporting sectors, who are keen to grow and work with out existing growers, wholesalers and food services providers in driving sales of premium, clean and green fresh produce, both domestically and internationally.”
The expansion will be the most significant for the market since moving to its Pooraka site in 1988, where it trades some 290,000 tonnes of fresh produce worth around A$590m.
