Taiwan typhoon

Southern China is preparing itself for a 'super typhoon' to make landfall on Saturday after it killed 15 people and wiped out crops in the northern Philippines, reports the Associated Press (AP).

Today (Wednesday) Hong Kong authorities ordered ships to remain docked, and people rushed to stockpile food as they geared up for super typhoon Megi, which is travelling towards the southern Chinese coast from the Philippines.

The storm left 15 dead when it struck the Philippines on Monday and flooded vast areas of rice and corn fields, the AP said, as well as flattening coconut and banana groves. It is estimated to have caused around US$30m in damage to local infrastructure and crops.

Local media has warned Hong Kong residents to prepare for the worst, but no evacuations have been ordered so far.

The Hong Kong Observatory said the typhoon is expected to develop winds of more than 115mph (185kmph) - or super typhoon strength - by Thursday.
