The Angello Sweet & Seedless Pepper from Syngenta Seeds in the Netherlands has come out on top at the Fruit Logistica Innovation Awards (FLIA), held on the final day of the event at the Berlin Exhibition Centre.
Boasting a vibrant red colour and thin skin, the seedless red baby pepper is conical in shape and has a crunchy taste, designed to be eaten either as a snack or used in salads.
The product has been tested using Syngenta's own consumer research department, along with its exclusive partners on the project, Bakkavor and The Greenery.
Indeed, The Greenery – which is the exclusive sales partner for Angello in North and West Europe, introduced the variety at Fruit Logistica, describing it as 'perfect for packed lunches or daytrips'.
The Angello Sweet & Seedless Pepper will be sold in snack-sized packages and, to ensure a year-round supply, the vegetable will be cultivated in Spain, Israel and the Netherlands.
In Berlin, the pepper saw off competition from 10 other FLIA nominees, with Rijk Zwaan's lovemysalad.com website concept taking the runner-up prize and the Achacha from Bud Holland in third place.
