Tomatoes occupy the top spot in the inaugural Produce Plus-Nielsen Top 20 Products.
Launched at Hort Connections in Brisbane last week, the Top 20 analyses the performance of the top fresh fruit and vegetable products in the Australian market over the last 12 months.
Nielsen Homescan data has been used to rank the Top 20 products, based on dollar share (percentage) of total fruit and vegetable sales purchased for take-home consumption for the 52-week period ending 21 April 2018.
With a 7.4 per cent dollar share, tomatoes were ranked at number one, with 95 per cent of Australian households buying the fruit.
Bananas ranked number two on the list with a 7.3 per cent dollar share, followed by potatoes and apples (both 5.6 per cent).
“With more consumers focused on improving their health and wellness, the market settings have never been better to grow the sales of fresh produce. The Top 20 delivers insight into where the growth is coming from and where the future opportunities lie,' said Chanel Day, associate director at Nielsen
The Top 20 also analyses year-on-year dollar sales growth relating to the year ending 21 April 2018 versus the year prior. Mangoes, which ranked number 20 on the list (1.7 per cent dollar share), had the highest upturn in sales growth at 28.1 per cent year-on-year. Blueberries and mandarins also witnessed strong sales growth, with 19.7 per cent and 16.4 per cent growth respectively. Tomatoes (-2.2 per cent), onions (-6.5 per cent) and potatoes (-7.7 per cent) were among the categories that registered a decline in sales.
Each of the Top 20 products have been allocated their own page in the 24-page supplement, with industry leaders supplying commentary on each category featured.
“Having some of the leading players across the sector provide their thoughts on what’s driving the performance of their products adds further weight to our analysis,” said Produce Plus editor Matthew Jones. “There is a thirst for fresh insights in our industry and this publication caters for that.”
