Old distribution centre transformed into a temperature-controlled fresh produce market
T&G Fresh, opened the doors to its new Auckland fresh produce market, hosting fruit and vegetables from growers across the country and around the world.
The new modern temperature-controlled facility, formerly a distribution centre, has had extensive improvements made over the past few months to enhance its functionality, with the addition of more refrigeration plant, new canopies and improved vehicle access.
Rod Gibson, managing director of T&G Fresh said the facility is fully insulated to provide an improved refrigerated supply chain, helping to retain the quality and freshness of the produce so it reaches customers and consumers at its best.
“T&G has a long legacy in fresh produce trading – 125 years ago our founders Turners & Growers ran New Zealand’s fresh produce auction houses in central Auckland. We’re proud to be part of the successful global business we have today, bringing fresh New Zealand-grown fruit and vegetables to customers throughout New Zealand and around the world,” said Gibson.
“At T&G Fresh our domestic business keeps the flow of fresh produce going, with produce grown with care by our network of growers out to our 11 markets around New Zealand. As well as being growers ourselves, the independent growers we work with include some of the country’s largest orchards, as well as local market gardeners.
“As growers we all take great care to grow fresh nutritious fruit and vegetables for Kiwis to enjoy – whether it’s consumed in the home, or at one of the many great eateries New Zealand has to offer. Retaining freshness and quality is critical, and the new facility will enhance our ability to do this.”
The new Auckland site consists of a large open market floor, office and staff areas, several expansive coolstore spaces, purpose-built truck and heavy vehicle driveway access for efficient delivery of produce and collection of orders, designed to meet the diverse needs of customers from New Zealand’s largest supermarkets to artisan restaurants.
“The market floor forms the centre of the new site, showcasing fresh produce from growers across the country and around the world. A new feature here is the addition of a commercial kitchen to cater for industry and public events, inspiring and educating customers on new and in-season produce offerings.”
The move is the final part of T&G’s transition out of its former Monahan Road and Clemow Drive site in Auckland, a process that began several years ago, with the T&G Global corporate office team moving to the Central Park business zone in Ellerslie at the end of 2022.
