The pear was developed in collaboration with New Zealand’s Prevar and Plant & Food Research and grown in Australia
Seeka has introduced a new addition to its premium fruit portfolio, Ruby Roo, a visually striking red-skinned Nashi. The official launch took place at the International Fresh Produce Australia and New Zealand (IFPA ANZ) member event during Hort Connections 2025 in Brisbane, Australia.
Developed and grown by Seeka Australia in Bunbartha, Victoria, Ruby Roo adds another premium offering to the company’s portfolio.
With its ruby-red skin, pure white flesh, deliciously sweet flavour, and crisp, juicy texture, Seeka said the Nashi pear embodies the company’s commitment to innovation, quality, and consumer appeal.
“Ruby Roo is a proud milestone for Seeka – it’s a fruit that reflects our focus on delivering premium, differentiated produce to market,” said Michael Franks, chief executive of Seeka. “It’s bold and it’s bursting with flavour.”
While Ruby Roo will not currently be available for sale in New Zealand, its development is a significant step forward in Seeka’s strategy to provide a diverse and high quality fruit offering year-round.
Seeka said Ruby Roo can be enjoyed in many ways by consumers whether by biting into it fresh, slicing it up as a healthy snack to go in children’s lunchboxes, tossing it into a salad, or pairing it with cheese and wine.
While Ruby Roo is grown in Australia it has New Zealand origins. Seeka partnered with Prevar to develop the uniquely red, nashi. Prevar is well-known, having commercially licensed 18 varieties.
“This Red Nashi is the result of years of research and development by the world-renowned pear breeding team at Plant & Food Research, in collaboration with Prevar. The variety delivers a unique, high-quality eating experience that consumers will love,” said Amanda Lyon, brand manager at Prevar.
