Pinata polytunnels

After successfully protecting its strawberry crop during hail storms in Queensland’s Granite Belt, Piñata Farms has announced it will expand its polytunnels at its Wamuran farm ahead of the strawberry season.

Last year the family business installed 1.6ha of polytunnels at its Stanthorpe strawberry farm, which successfully protected the fruit from damage from three hail storms last year.

From March, polytunnels will be erected at the Wamuran strawberry farm ahead of May to September season, while the Stanthorpe site will see an additional 8ha of polytunnels added in May, for its September through May season.

'We're continuing to adapt growing techniques to achieve the best results from fruit grown in a protected environment. Our focus is on improving marketable yield,' Gavin Scurr, Piñata MD said in a company statement.

Piñata Farms produces strawberries year round on approximately 48ha at Wamuran and 10ha at Stanthorpe.
