Youngsters get a taste of market life during school holidays
The Melbourne Market Authority (MMA) may have just inspired its next generation of traders.
‘Children in the Market’ days were held at the market’s Epping site this week (27-28 September).
The event saw children of Victoria’s wholesalers, fruiterers and florists set their alarms before dawn to see their parents in action.
With children under 15 years not normally permitted on site, MMA chief executive Mark Maskiell said the event provided an insight into what market life is like.
Children in the Market events were a regular school holiday occurrence pre-Covid. After a two-year break, Maskiell said the market community was keen to see the event re-introduced this year.
“It’s always great to see children at the Melbourne Market for these special events. Our market community take pride in welcoming the kids on site, and there’s a great vibe in the place over the two days,” said Maskiell.
While getting to experience first-hand what goes on in the market was the main focus of the event, some entertainment was planned, with show bags, face painting and competitions adding a bit of fun.
