Owner of independent retailer, Fresh Sensations Carindale and Chermside, John Nicolaou, has been crowned this year’s Mango King after placing the winning bid at the 2024 Brisbane Markets Mango Auction.

Nicolaou bid A$32,000 on the ‘first’ tray of mangoes supplied by Darwin grower the Northern Territory Mango Industry Association (NTMIA), president, Leo Skliros. This was Nicolaou’s second Mango King title, after previously being crowned a decade ago in 2013.

Proceeds from the 2024 Brisbane Markets Mango Auction benefit Redkite, who provide practical, financial, and mental health support to families who have a child with cancer, and The Lady Musgrave Trust, who provide practical solutions that save lives and transition young women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to a life of opportunity and prosperity.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity for the industry to give back to Queensland families who are doing it a bit tougher than most,” BML chair, Anthony Kelly said.

According to Kelly, a total of over A$44,000 was raised at this year’s auction.

“This year’s mango season is looking strong. We’re expecting more mangoes than last year at more affordable prices and a better quality of product than last year,” he said.
