Laboratory testing food safety USDA

A new food safety centre will be formed at the University of Sydney to advance the safety of fruit and vegetables in Australia.

A A$2.2m Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Training Centre grant has been awarded to the University of Sydney’s agriculture and environment faculty, who will work with more than 20 industry partners to form a new ‘Food Safety in the Fresh Produce Industry’ centre.

The centre will focus on creating innovative and novel ways of increasing food safety in the fresh produce industry, with the research to be conducted over four years and will include nine projects.

“Our world-class researchers are committed to working closely with industry and community to find novel ways of translating their work into practical solutions through partnerships with industry,’ added Duncan Ivison, deputy vice-chancellor of research at the Sydney University.

The research will be a collaboration with the Fresh Produce Safety Centre Australia & New Zealand and industry groups.
