The World Union of Wholesale Markets has given its official support to a new initiative that aims to establish a new International Day of Fruits and Vegetables.

Announced during the association’s recent general assemly in Rimini, Italy, the project is understood to have the backing of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and AIAM5, an alliance that brings together 37 national and international groups from 30 countries worldwide, all of which work to promote the consumption of fruit and vegetables through 5-a-day schemes or similar.

The initiative, which is also supported by WUWM member Lo Valledor wholesale market in Chile, aims to raise awareness about the vital health benefits of fruits and vegetables, promote daily consumption for improved nutrition worldwide, foster sustainable agricultural practices to protect the planet, and fight food waste and loss throughout the supply chain.

“This initiative is a powerful step towards enhancing global food security, improving public health, and advancing sustainable agriculture,” said a spokesperson for WUWM.

“Let us work together to make the International Day of Fruits and Vegetables a reality! By supporting this global movement, we can create a lasting impact on our food systems and the well-being of communities everywhere.”
