Early end to European and Californian seasons have led to good commercial conditions for the country’s exporters
US company Vanguard Group International expects to produce around 4.5mn boxes in Ica, southern Peru, this season, around a million boxes more than it did last season.
As reported in Peruvian newspaper Gestión, the increased volume consists mainly of premium varieties including Ivory and Autumn Crisp.
Harvest in the north of the country has apparently been affected by water shortages, which have affected quality and shortened the season, the report indicated.
Vanguard’s Ethan Williams said this, combined with an early finish to the European and Californian seasons, had led to strong demand from the markets of Europe, US and south-east Asia.
“Although we do not have our own production in the north of Peru, we have several partners in that region that have been supplying us since the beginning of September,” he said.
