Russia's largest retailer X5 Group has announced the launch of a new concept aimed at increasing its offering of fruit and vegetables as well as a range of other fresh foods.

The plan, which will involve the group's Perekrestok chain, is expected to strengthen the group's position in the Russian supermarket segment, according to foodbizdaily.

The fresh range will encompass fruit, vegetables, juices, chilled meat, seafood, cheeses, salads, pastries and ready meals, according to the group, and is expected to cover 60 per cent of Perekrestok's total offering by 2011.

Meanwhile, the retailer has been awarded the 'Company of the Year' title by RBC Group in its retail category, with the group recognised for its yearly results and positive image.
