Plane take off

Plans are underway in China to develop a US$4.8bn cargo airport near Beijing that would be the world’s largest.

State-owned China Radio International reported the facility, which should be operational by October 2017, will have nine runways and handle 5.5m tonnes of cargo a year.

The as-yet-unnamed airport will be situated in North China’s Hebei province between Beijing and Langfeng and will cover around 2,700ha.

Reports suggest the Beijing Nanyuan Airport could close once the new facility if operational.
