US supermarket operator Weis Marketshas posted an increase in earnings and sales on the back of greater efficiencies and promotional activity, according to a report by just-food.

The company said a US$3m investment in promotional programmes helped to boost sales during the first quarter of 2010 by 9.6 per cent to US$606.2m, up from US$666.4m. Identical store sales also rose by 3 per cent during the three-month period.

First quarter earnings grew by 5.2 per cent to US$17.38m, up from US$16.52m during the year-earlier period.

Weis president and chief executive David Hepfinger said that the retailer’s profitability had been driven by increased efficiencies and improved execution.

“We continued to improve our overall level of execution and increase efficiencies at store and distribution levels, which helped us generate solid sales and earnings increases,” he explained.
