In the US, Weis Markets has posted a strong set of results for the third quarter of 2011, with growth in sales and net income achieved despite the ongoing difficult economic environment.

The group said that net income for the three-month period came in at US$17m, growth of 4.1 per cent on the same quarter of 2010, just-food reported.

In addition, sales climbed 6 per cent to reach US$678.6m, while same-store sales were up 6.5 per cent on the same period last year for the retailer, which operates 162 stores in Pennsylvania and in Maryland, New York, New Jersey and West Virginia.

'Our company continues to generate strong results in a difficult economic environment,' noted chairman Robert Weis.
