Dutch shipping company WEC Lines is set to create an important new link for Portuguese exporters to the German market with the addition of Hamburg to its NWC-Portugal service, effective 23 September.

The service already links the ports of Leixões and Setúbal in Portugal with the French port of Montoir in Brittany, Antwerp in Belgium, and Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

“By departing from Hamburg on Sundays and arriving in Leixões on Saturdays and Setúbal on Mondays, this service offers an eco-friendly alternative to truck transport from Germany into Portugal,” the group said in a statement.

The new weekly service, which incorporates two dedicated 1,000-TEU vessels in a 14-day fixed day rotation, will transport temperature-sensitive, perishable cargo including fruit and vegetables using 45ft HCPW reefer containers.

According to the company, the service connects with “optimal short-sea and hinterland linkages” to provide customers with a heightened level of flexibility and efficiency.

“By adding Hamburg to our short sea services, we offer a fast and reliable solution for our Portuguese clients into Northwestern Europe and vice versa,” said WEC Lines managing director Caesar Luikenaar.

“This underlines our commitment to respond to market demand while offering continued optimal solutions for our existing client base.
