An Italian bill that is set to ensure supermarkets cut down on waste food by donating it to charity is one step away from coming into force.

Having received widespread bipartisan support, the bill is expected to pass through the lower house next week before moving on to the senate for approval, The Local reported.

The bill aims to offer incentives to those donating food that would often go to waste, different to the French model that fines supermarkets that are found to be wasting food.

“Punishing wasters is not so helpful: this is all about encouraging donations,” Democratic Party MP Maria Chiara Gadda told La Repubblica.
