Wal-Mart de Mexico (Walmex), the Latin America country's leading retailer, is looking to shake up its suppler base as it searches for ways to cut down on supply chain costs.
Chief executive Scot Rank told visitors to Reuters Latin American Investment Summit in Mexico City that lowering supply costs would help the retailers margins during a time when customers remain wary of price increases.
Mr Rank noted that Walmex had learnt from the recent acquisition of Walmart Centroamerica and was considering ways of improving its supply chain in Mexico, Reuters reported.
'Here in Mexico we transport sometimes very perishable goods over large distances,' he said. 'We're looking into ways that we might be able to buy closer to our stores, or invest in training and support to communities so that they can focus on a certain type of product.'
