Walgreens Co has kick-started a campaign to offer healthy foods on-the-go by rolling out a pilot programme that has seen fresh fruit and vegetables introduced at 30 of its stores.

The largest drugstore in the US has also introduced prepared salads, wraps and soups to its range across a number of stores in San Francisco, The Packer reported.

'Today's consumers are looking for more healthy food alternatives,' said company spokesperson Robert Elfinger in an email. 'Our San Francisco area customers are already buying a lot of food in our stores and there are requests for more product offerings.

'As we learn from this initial test, we believe there's potential to expand this offering to more stores in the Bay area,' he added.
