Walgreens has reportedly appointed grocery and convenience-store veteran Jim Jensen to the position of divisional merchandise manager for the company’s new fresh food category.

Mr Jensen left a similar position at Tesco’s Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market at the end of 2009 and has previously worked as a category manager at 7-Eleven, according to a report by the Progressive Grocer.

Walgreens, traditionally a drugstore chain, announced last week that it plans to offer fresh foods and prepared meals to customers short on time across its network of over 7,000 outlets across the US.

The new offer is expected to include prepared meals, salads, fresh fruit and ready-to-bake pizzas, in limited target markets.

As part of its fresh food expansion, Walgreens is said to be in talks with food manufacturers including Unilever, Nestle and Sara Lee.
