Walgreen

In the US, Walgreen Co. is planning to offer fresh foods and prepared meals to customers short on time across its network of over 7,000 outlets, in a bid to boost revenues that slipped through November and December last year.

The move would see freshly prepared foods such as salads and fresh-cut fruit, as well as ready-to-bake pizzas and sandwiches, added to the drugstore's range, according to a report by Bloomberg.

'Everyone is time-starved and we have the most convenient 7,000 locations in the US,' Bryan Pugh, vice-president of marketing at the group, told Bloomberg. 'They're on-the-way-home destinations that are easy to get in and out of and will provide a good value.'

The move will push Walgreen into competition with supermarket chains Kroger and Safeway Inc., membership warehouse clubs operated by Costco and Wal-Mart, and retailers including Target, as well as convenience stores and petrol stations.
