Wal-Mart has said that it is planning to add over 22,000 jobs at new or expanded US stores this year, covering positions from management to cashiers and sales associates.

The group announced last year that they would be looking to open 142-157 new outlets in the country during the 2010 fiscal year, with over 1,000 jobs set to be created in individual states such as Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, South Carolina, Utah and Virginia.

'During the difficult economic time, we're proud to be able to create quality jobs for thousands of Americans this year,' said Wal-Mart Stores Inc vice-chairman Eduardo Castro-Wright. 'At Wal-Mart, we offer competitive pay and benefits and real opportunities for our associates to advance and build careers – job creation is one way in which we're working hard every day to help people across the county live better.'

Richard Studley, president and chief executive of the chamber of commerce in Michigan (where over 1,500 jobs will be created) said that the announcement was an exciting one for the state.

'The positive impact that these jobs will have on the families of the new employees and their communities cannot be overstated.'
