Waitrose shopping

An extensive survey of shoppers in the UK has seen Waitrose come out on top in the battle to be recognised as the country's best supermarket, beating off competition from the so-called 'big four' of Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco as well as discounters Aldi and Lidl.

In the survey, carried out by consumer watchdog Which?, 13,025 UK shoppers were asked to rank supermarkets on price, product quality, availability of goods and store environment.

Waitrose topped the poll with a score of 79 out of a possible 100, with the Which? report saying: 'Shopping at Waitrose is a pleasure, according to several members. One loved its uncluttered stores with its wide aisles, and some raved about the quality of both its products and staff.'

Marks & Spencer came second in the poll, registering a score of 64 out of 100, followed by the two discounters of Aldi and Lidl, who each scored 61 out of 100 to finish ahead of the 'big four' and were commended for their bargains and high-quality fresh produce.

Sainsbury's (58/100), Morrisons (56/100), Asda (49/100) and Tesco (49/100) finished 5th-8th in the survey, with criticisms including high prices and, in particular, the quality of Tesco's own-label products, according to Which?.
