Leading UK-based fresh food grocer Waitrose has announced that it has tied up a contract with logistics specialist Gist, that will see the group become a key provider for components of the retailer's primary transport operations.

Gist, which specialises in fresh food supply chains, now collects 400 pallets per week from Scotland-based Waitrose suppliers for consolidation and onward movement from its Bellshill depot.

The combination of Gist's extensive network coverage, flexibility and attractive, locally based solutions fitted in well with Waitrose's business requirements, the group noted, with Gist incorporating some key contractors previously employed to enhance the service and value offer to Waitrose.

'Waitrose has a reputation for providing the highest quality fresh food and it's essential that our suppliers are also committed to delivering the highest quality service,' said Kit Woodward, supply chain development manager at Waitrose. 'Gist has extensive experience in fresh food logistics and they offer the levels of quality, service and value that we require to meet our customers' expectations.'

Martin Gwynn, chief executive of Gist, said that the group welcomed the opportunity presented to them, by Waitrose.

'Gist has more than 40 years of experience in the fresh food supply chain industry,' he explained. 'We're delighted to be given this opportunity to put our expertise in practice for the Waitrose primary supply chain to deliver their business with the quality and the value their customers expect.'
