UK retailer Waitrose has posted a sales increase of 8.7 per cent for the first half of the year compared with the year-earlier period, according to Retail Gazette.

The latest data from analyst Kantar Worldpanel showed that the retailer also saw its market share rise by 0.2 per cent.

Rupert Thomas, marketing director for the supermarket chain, commented: “As Waitrose starts its second half of the financial year, sales last week were 10.2 per cent higher compared to the same week a year ago. In the first week of school holidays, many branches traded ahead of levels expected during the summer break.'

Online sales from Waitrose also saw a major increase, rising 18.2 per cent last week compared with the same period last year.
