Waitrose shopping

The latest UK retail grocery report from market analyst Kantar Worldpanel has demonstrated the strength of both the discount and premium markets in the UK, while highlighting a tough period for Morrisons.

For the 12-week period ended 2 September, high-end retailer Waitrose grew market share to 4.6 per cent from 4.4 per cent, while German retailer Aldi saw its share increase from 2.4 per cent in 2011 to 2.9 per cent.

Of the big four retailers, Morrisons saw the biggest drop, with its share down to 11.5 per cent from 11.7 per cent after recording the slowest growth of the four, Kantar noted.

Good sales growth at both Asda and Sainsbury's saw their market share jump to 17.6 per cent and 16.4 per cent respectively, while market leader Tesco showed 'evidence of a fightback' as its fall in market share eased back to a quarterly total of 30.8 per cent.
