Following a difficult start to the season, the Association of Val Venosta Fruit and Vegetable Producers (VI.P) says it has seen positive developments and signs of an upturn.

'Sales have been very satisfactory, and in fact we can highlight a period of record sales between December 2009 and January 2010,' reported Fabio Zanesco, commercial manager at the Italian company.

'This has been accompanied by an excellent decumulation of all the major varieties.'

With Gala sales now well on the way and due to conclude at the end of March, the first few months' marketing of Golden Delicious and Stark are also reported to have gone well, according to VI.P, and prices have been recovering as a result.

As of this week, the Pinova variety is set to come online and will be available until the end of June, with other varieties expected to follow normal seasonal patterns.

Consumption levels in Italy are also reported to be holding up well, while in Spain and Scandinavia – two of VI.P's leading export markets, the company has seen 'good results' so far.

'We are confident that other international markets will open more and more, given the excessive heat seen during harvesting which has caused problems with product storage in a number of other European production areas,' added Mr Zanesco.
