Villafrut

Italian fresh produce export company Villafrut has officially opened its new, expanded headquarters in Villafontana di Oppeano, near Verona.

The 20,000m2 facility, which has been enlarged in order to support an expansion of the group's business in a number of markets, will be able to store a total of 2,000 pallets at any one time and handle around 60,000 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables every year.

Ten years ago, Villafrut extended its operations at the site and, since then, has apparently seen steady growth involving the establishment of a subsidiary in Spain and a marked increase in sales to customers across much of eastern Europe.

'Ultimately, we have enlarged in order to increase our company's efficiency,' Villafrut director Matteo Falzi told Bologna-based newspaper L'Informazione during a special ceremony to inaugurate the new centre.

According to Falzi, the bigger facility offers more flexibility on a larger scale in terms of its coldstorage capacity, as well as a better working environment for those employed at the site.

All products in transit via the centre will be managed using a computerised system that monitors them constantly, from the field in which they are grown to the shelf from which they are sold.

Tracing its roots back to the 1960s and the work of fruit and vegetable trader Giacomo Falzi, Villafrut adopted its current name in 1984 and today supplies its own products to a number of retail clients in countries including Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania and Polond.
