The US Patent Office has registered Binh Thuan dragon fruit from Vietnam as a trademark, reports www.tuoitrenews.vn.
The trademark will be valid for the next 10 years, and can be extended for successive 10-year periods, the article said.
Binh Thuan – Vietnam's leading dragon fruit exporter – ships its fruit (around 70 per cent of total Vietnamese dragon fruit exports) to the US, Europe, Japan and China.
This year, Vietnamese dragon fruit sales are expected to peak during forthcoming Chinese New Year of the Dragon celebrations.
Red dragon fruit is particularly popular in the run-up to Chinese New Year since its colour is regarded as lucky, and the fruit is widely believed to bestow good health thanks to its high vitamin C content, the article said.
