US-based Val Verde Vegetable Co. has announced that it is implementing the Airocide PPT air sanitation system for use on its range of local and imported produce at its McAllen, Texas facility.

The Airocide technology, developed by NASA, is a chemical-free system killing airborne mould, fungi, bacteria and viruses as well as volatile organic compounds such as ethylene gas, enhancing quality assurance on fresh produce.

Manufactured and distributed by KES Science and Technology, the system is designed to compliment results of filtration systems such as HEPA/MERV, according to the group, while also being energy efficient following its original design for use in the NASA space station programme.

Val Verde Vegetable Co. operates a 9,290m2 facility in McAllen, dealing with a range of produce including brassicas, cucumbers, limes, peppers and exotic vegetables.
