The US has granted access to Vietnamese lychee, longan, mango and star apple, following bilateral trade meetings in Washington last week, according to Viet Nam News.

The Vietnam-US Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (Tifa) Council announced the deal on Monday, which will also see Vietnam open its market to US pears, apples, grapes and cherries, the report said.

Tifa reached its agreement after successful talks on market access and bilateral cooperation on 19-20 May.

Vietnam's minister of industry and trade, also Vietnamese president of the Tifa council, Vu Huy Hoang, reportedly called the deal 'an important initiative'.

The US and Vietnam have pledged to strengthen Tifa cooperation, including an 'early warning' mechanism for emerging difficulties, the report said.

The two sides set a target of 20-25 per cent in annual two-way trade growth.

Two-way trade between Vietnam and the US reached US$18bn last year, 13 times higher than in 2001 when the countries first signed a free trade agreement, Viet Nam News said.

The US has become Vietnam's most important export market for key items, it added.
